Women’s Basketball: University Of Pennsylvania vs. Yale ( paul D riggio)

Today’s game features a match-up between Ivy League Rivals, as the lady University of Pennsylvania Quakers hosts the lady Yale Bulldogs. UPENN is coming into today’s game having endured a difficult season thus far. Their record of 1-14 is not the most impressive in the Ivy League Conference but they are hoping to build upon that with a victory against the 6-10 Yale Bulldogs.

After scoring the first basket of the game, the lady Quakers seemed poise and ready for the challenge ahead. They fought hard to stay competitive with, but 7 unanswered points by Yale meant they had to turn up their intensity. To offset the quickness and scoring ability of # 15, Megan Vasquez, UPENN stayed with their 2-3 zone defense. But as hard as they, fought, Yale always had an answer for UPENN. Megan would continue to dominate the first half, scoring 12 of Yale’s 24 first haft points. For the lady Quakers, it was junior Kim Adams leading in scoring as she contributed 7 of UPENN’s 14 points.

The second half proved to be a lot more competitive than the first. UPENN came out scoring 14 points to Yale’s 9 points in the first 9:26mins, cutting Yale’s lead to 7 points. UPENN’s adjustment of alternating between their strong 2-3 zone defense to full-court zone trap and an increase in their physicality had a lot to with their success in this half. Kim Adams exemplified the tough play as she was very instrumental in the lady Quakers rally.

With about 3:24 left in the second half Kim hit a huge 3-pointer to cut Yale’s lead to 4 points. As she was heating up, so was #10 Yoyo Greenfield. UPENN was able to shut down Vasquez in this half but this half belonged to Yoyo. Being held to only 2 points in the first half, Yoyo exploded for 12 second half points. She controlled this half with great ball handling and clutch 3 point shooting.

Despite their second half rally, Yale proved to be the better team today. The final score of 56-49 moved them to a (7-10) record and as for the lady Quakers; they will look towards the meeting with Brown to get that elusive second victory.
