Philadelphia Flyers vs New York Islanders (paul D riggio)

Tonight’s game featured some NHL action as the Philadelphia Flyers play host their Atlantic Division rivals, the New York Islanders. Coming into the game, the Flyers have beaten the Islander 13 straight times and they hope to build upon that streak tonight.

The first goal of the game came at the 11:48 mark. Receiving a pass from #36 Darroll Powe, Flyers’ right wing man # 48 Danny Briere was able to score amidst a slight scramble. The Flyers dominated the offensive position in the 1st period, limiting the Islander to 10 shot attempts while they, themselves, took 16 shots. At the 3:30 mark of the first period, #19 Scott Hartnell scored his 12th goal of the season as he was assist by #18 Mike Richards and #44 Kimmo Timonen. His goal came within a power-play opportunity.

The start of the 2nd period exemplified elegance, grace, and a lot of flair without much result. It was a struggle to score, by the Islanders against a struggle to get possession, by the Flyers. The Islanders spread out their offense, and dominated the passion of the puck.

The 2nd period was a more competitive period for the Islanders, scoring at the 5:16 mark. The goal was score by # 12 Josh Bailey, his 13th of the season and was assisted by #21 Kyle Okposo and #13 Rob Schremp.

To the fan’s dismay, only a few fisticuffs occurred. The refs kept control of the game but the game became a lot more physical towards the end of the 2nd period and the entire 3rd period. The Islanders were unable to score on various power-play opportunities and ended up dropping their 14th straight against the Flyers. The final score of the game: 2-1, Flyers.

Women’s Basketball: University Of Pennsylvania vs. Yale ( paul D riggio)

Today’s game features a match-up between Ivy League Rivals, as the lady University of Pennsylvania Quakers hosts the lady Yale Bulldogs. UPENN is coming into today’s game having endured a difficult season thus far. Their record of 1-14 is not the most impressive in the Ivy League Conference but they are hoping to build upon that with a victory against the 6-10 Yale Bulldogs.

After scoring the first basket of the game, the lady Quakers seemed poise and ready for the challenge ahead. They fought hard to stay competitive with, but 7 unanswered points by Yale meant they had to turn up their intensity. To offset the quickness and scoring ability of # 15, Megan Vasquez, UPENN stayed with their 2-3 zone defense. But as hard as they, fought, Yale always had an answer for UPENN. Megan would continue to dominate the first half, scoring 12 of Yale’s 24 first haft points. For the lady Quakers, it was junior Kim Adams leading in scoring as she contributed 7 of UPENN’s 14 points.

The second half proved to be a lot more competitive than the first. UPENN came out scoring 14 points to Yale’s 9 points in the first 9:26mins, cutting Yale’s lead to 7 points. UPENN’s adjustment of alternating between their strong 2-3 zone defense to full-court zone trap and an increase in their physicality had a lot to with their success in this half. Kim Adams exemplified the tough play as she was very instrumental in the lady Quakers rally.

With about 3:24 left in the second half Kim hit a huge 3-pointer to cut Yale’s lead to 4 points. As she was heating up, so was #10 Yoyo Greenfield. UPENN was able to shut down Vasquez in this half but this half belonged to Yoyo. Being held to only 2 points in the first half, Yoyo exploded for 12 second half points. She controlled this half with great ball handling and clutch 3 point shooting.

Despite their second half rally, Yale proved to be the better team today. The final score of 56-49 moved them to a (7-10) record and as for the lady Quakers; they will look towards the meeting with Brown to get that elusive second victory.

Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame-JT

Early Saturday morning Wimlington Sports Media Relations class met at the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. The class was able to catch up on the History of Sports in Delaware. The Museum consisted of players and coaches that are from Delaware or that have played for Delaware teams. Not only did these athletes play to recognize the state but also had some kind of success in what they did, whether it would be for being the first athlete, or setting records for Delaware. It was beneficial that the young students at Wilmington got a background of what sports use to be like and how they have evolved into todays highly well known entertainment.

Penn Women’s Basketball recap

Coming into Friday’s game against the Bulldogs of Yale, the Penn women’s basketball team had drug their feet, with a disappointing 1-14 start to the season. The Quakers are in the process of a rebuilding year with the acquisition of a new coaching staff headed by Mike McLaughlin, who had achieved the highest winning percentage in women’s college basketball.

The Bulldogs got off to a quick start with a lead of 21-10. The Quakers only managed to hit a free throw over a span of 7 minutes during the Yale run. The Quakers were looking to find their stride as the first half winded down when Jess Knapp hit a put back at the buzzer to shorten the Bulldogs lead to 26-16.

In the second half the Quakers pulled to within 4 with about six minutes to go. That was as close as Penn would get as the Bulldogs held on tight to the lead. Penn’s Buscar hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to make the score 56-51. The Bulldogs tacked on 2 more to win 58-51.

On January 16, 2010 the sports media relations class at Wilmington University had the great opportunity to visit one of the most proud sports museums in Pennsylvania The Mickey Vernon Sports Museum. This museum is located in Delaware County PA right along route 202. Jim VanKoskiewho is the director of the museum greeted the class at the door and took them on a tour they will not soon forget. The Museum main focus is around two of Delaware County legends Paul Arzin and Mickey Vernon. Both, of which made big strides in the sports that they played Arzin was part of the NBA and Vernon to MLB. Jim was a close friend of the late Mickey Vernon. From the outside of the building you would never guess that the three level building could hold so much history from baseball, basketball, football and even medals from the Olympics. Before they left the class got to see a video that Mickey Vernon shot of what the game was like when we play the game.

Mickey Vernon-Greg S

On Saturday January 16, our sports media relations class had the opportunity to visit one of the most proud sports museum's in all of Pennsylvania. The Mickey Vernon Sports Museum. The museum is located in Delaware County PA. We were greeted at the door by the director Jim VanKoskie. VanKoskie is a very close personal friend of the late Mickey Vernon. The museum is centered around the two biggest legends of Delaware County Mickey Vernon and Paul Arzin. Both are respected players in both the NBA and MLB even though they both were overshadowed by other superstars during their era. The class would walk around the museum taking all that is rich in tradition and pride in Delaware County. The 3 levels of the sports history include several used game equipment from the legends of the past. These include baseballs, footballs, basketballs, and even some gold medals. The conclusion of the tour ended with a 2nd sitdown in a room while watcihng a video of Mickey Vernon. The video was a one of a kind look into the behind the scenes look at what baseball was really like in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Their was no audio included in the tape but several years later Mickey Vernon was approached and asked to do commentary on his own video. I thought his passion for the game of baseball really showed in his expressions and comments. He truly had a love for the game of baseball.

Flyers Game/ Brett McNeal

Its a about seven minutes into the 3rd period and the flyers are up 2-1. Overall, the team is playing pretty well. There have been some questionable calls by the officials on the flyers but other than that, they look quick and poised. We havent really seen to much of the two rookies from each team in James van Riemsdyk and John Tavares. Both have been pretty quiet today. Scott Hartnell has switched line today and it did pay of when he scored his 12th goal this season with assists from Mike Richards and Simon Gagne.

MUSEUM / Jordan

On Saturday we met at the Mickey Vernon Sports Museum. This title is relatively recent, the museum was once called the Delaware County Hall of Fame for sports. When we arrived we met a museum guide Jim VanKoskie who was friends with the late Mickey Vernon. Jim led the class into the room dedicated to one of the NBA’s top 50 players of all-time, Paul Arizin. Paul Arizin and Mickey Vernon have striking similarities. Neither played high school sports yet they remarkably emerged to become Hall of Famers in their professions, Arizin a basketball player, Vernon a baseball legend .These are guys you may have not heard much about because of the players that played in there era but both players shared a few individual honors and achievements, including scoring titles and battings top honors. The most interesting thing in my opinion was the film about Vernon. How down to earth he seemed and his natural love and interest for the game was amazing. He was one of the first to document the players around him and catch the living legends that played around him throughout his career. What makes him unique is how he realized he was a part of something special and gathered priceless documentation like photos, autographs, and video footage. Next we took a tour of the rest of the museum which was informational and impressive. As you climb up the stairs there is a different Olympic Medalist from the Delaware County on each step waiting up on the wall beside you. Each floor is decorated with great players from throughout the county. The memorabilia stationed on the third floor was packed with different intriguing items. There were pictures, cards, and throwback jerseys the athletes had worn. An interesting fact that I learned was about how big the Delco baseball league was around the area, it was a league the players were proud to be playing in.

Mickey Vernon Musuem - JT

Today January 16, 2010 the SPM 305 Sports Media Relations class of Wilmington University met at the Mickey Vernon Musuem or the Del County Hall of Fame for sports. The students met up with a tour guide, Jim VanKoskie. Jim took the class into a room specifically for Paul Arizin. Paul Arizin and Mickey Vernon had some similarities between them. Both of them never played high school sports and they became professionals. They both won two individual titles. Paul won 2 scoring titles in the NBA, Mickey a two time batting titlist. Jim also went on to enlighten the class that Harry O’ Neil played one half inning in the majors and never got an at bat. In the room we watched two movies. One of which was from Mickey Vernon and Joe Klecko. Mickey Vernon was a 7 time All-Star. He was the only player to carry around a Kodak video camera around to capture actions from the big leaguers for memories. Joe Klecko was a hard nosed tackle for the Jets. He made it as an All-Pro in three defensive line man positions. The class was then guided up two flights of stairs to find more memorabilia. At the bottom of the first flight of stairs there was a World Series game worn jersey that Mike Scioscia of the Angels who donated to the musuem. The visit was very impowering. It would give the students a background of sports in the Delaware area.

Philly Wings Game/ Brett McNeal

1st quarter almost in the book and currently the Wings are tied 1-1 with the Boston Blazers. Never have been to a NLL game before and from what has happened in the first, I can tell its a real fast paced game and very energetic. The fan are always cheering for the wings and booing the blazers. Even the announcer sounded legitimately upset when the Blazers scored.

January 15, 2010: Philadelphia 7ers vs Sacramento Kings (Paul D Riggio)

For our Sports Media class, we took a visit to the 76ers vs Kings game. Before tip-off, the class met Tom McGinnis, a radio play-by-play announcer of the philadelpia 76ers, and Anthony Gilbert, a feature writer for the 76ers and manager Samuel Dalembert’s website. As the Kings hit the court for pre-game shootaround, one can notice a certain buzz around Sacramento’s guard, rookie phenom Tyreke Evans. NBA TV is here, doing a cover story on the once, Philadelphia native, who has come back to claim victory over this Philadelphia squad. But also tonight there is an even more storyline for night for 76ers center, Samuel Dalembert. In the wake of all the horror surrounding the earthquake in Haiti, Dalembert plans on donating $100,000 of his money to a Unisef, along with the 76ers organization who, tonight is collecting donations from any giving heart.

As for the game, the 76ers opened up with a 5-0 lead early on. The kings than battled back to make it a competitive contest as they took the lead at the 7:44 mark, but it was the 76ers who ended up with the lead, closing out the first quarter with a comfortable 32-25 score. One item to note is the injury of all-star hopeful, Andre Iguodala, going down in the first. He has since return in the second quarter, but with limited offensive contribution. At the end of the second, the score is 49-47, 76ers with the lead. The leading scorer for the 76ers has been Thadeous Young with 12. And for the kings Spencer Hawes and Kevin Martin have both contributed with 9 points each.

Evan's Homecoming/ Lally

Tyreke Evan, a starting guard for the Kings of Sacramento returns home today to Philadelphia. As a youngster, he grew up playing basketball across the river Camden, New Jersey, he was selected fourth overall by the Sacramento Kings coming out of The University of Memphis. This season he has bolstered their starting five alongside scoring machine Kevin Martin. Before tipoff, NBA T.V. was here to do a player profile on Tyreke and his family; while interviewing not only Tyreke, but his brother, as well as his Grandmother who is sitting court side in a Kings number 13 jersey. Through half time Tyreke Evans having a slow first half with only eight points however was 4 for 4 in the first half for the kings, while also dishing out three assist for his team.

Samuel Dalembert / Joe Harris

Tonight’s game is just business as usual for the Sixers. However tonight has a lot bigger meaning to the Sixers man in the middle Samuel Dalembert. Dalembert is a Haiti native and the only current Haiti native playing in the NBA. With the earthquake that struck on January 13 Slamming Sammy decided to help out his native land by donating 100,000 dollars to the UNICEF in support of Haitian Relief Efforts. All the proceeds from tonight’s game will also be donating to help. Dalembert will also match the donations made by the fans who attend tonight’s game. Live here tonight to watch the donation was CNN.

Pre-game & 76ers Game/ Brett

There’s about five minutes left in the first half of the Sixers games and a lot has gone on. Before the game the class got spoken to by Tom McGinnis who is the play by play for the Philadelphia 76ers. He talked to us about how you should always have the drive to pursue what you want to pursue. He stated that, “the athlete part of someone will always be with them and always be in a competitive nature.”

Anthony Gilbert also spoke to us about how if you want to be successful, get as much information as you can from the people who surround you. Anthony said “ at the end of the night, all you have are your contacts.” It makes sense too because knowing people who also know people can be very important because you get more and more information from more people.

The 76ers are playing the Sacamento Kings and are currently ahead 46-38 with 2:30 left to go in the first half of the game. Early in the first quarter, Andre Iguodala went down with a right ankle sprain but has since returned to action. After one half of basketball, Thaddeus Young leads all scorers on the court with 12 points. Behind him is Sammie Dalembert also from the 76ers with 10 points.

Sixers Game - JT

Our car pool pulled up the parking lot- H of the Wachovia center promptly at 5:20. We then met up with Brian to escort us to get our passes for tonights Sixer’s and King’s game. Brian then took us to the area where we would be sitting and setting up shop for the night. He then passed each student a handout of the Sixer’s Daily Clips. We then talked a little bit about being a PR and what they do. Basically handle the situations between players and coaches from the press. They are the people that give as much information as they can with out giving them too much information. He then took us into two groups to check out the behind the scenes room. Where PR refine and sharpen their skills for tonights game. We met Tim. He deals with the pictures for the media. Upon returning back to our seats Tom McGinnis was able to speak with us. He enlightened us how he used his athletic work ethics to become the play-by-play announcer for the Sixers. Anthony Gilbert also gave us advice on “Networking”. He told us that a lot of success in the PR personnel deals with who you know. Then as a class we set up a Tweeter account to post updates on the game. Now we are at the point where we are writing about what we learned and have done in the past 3-hours.

Sixers game/ Greg

While attending the Philadelphia 76ers game this Friday for our sports media relations class, we had to opportunity to speak with Tom McGinnis who is the play-by-play radio announcer for the team. Tom met with our class about 45 minutes prior to the game and discussed what it was like to be in his shoes and what his profession consists of. Tom used his past as an athlete and said that his experience on the field had helped him in broadcasting. He related minor league baseball and making it to the major leagues in a sense that someone who masters the levels of minor league baseball will in a sense have a better shot at making it in the pros. Tom mentioned that he follows a lot of sports, not just basketball and insists that one can only get better from experience. Tom concluded by wishing all of us the best of luck in school and in the sports world.

The class arrived at the Wachovia Center at 5:20 and met up with Brian(instructor). We entered through the media entrance and recieved our media credentials. We walked into the court area and arranged our things in the courtside media section of the arena. Brian briefed us on the backround and duties of PR personnel and their duties. Next, the class headed back towards the area where the media and staff can grab a bite to eat and prepare before the game. After we got back to our seats the Sixer's radio play-by-play announcer lectured us on his road to where he is and some of his past experiences that have helped him along the way. So far this experience has been pretty cool. Learning more about what the media, pr personnel, and staff do has been interesting, this is my first time involved in anything like this.
